Arsenal legend and BBC Match of the Day pundit Martin Keown believes Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier should be named in the England squad ahead of Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne.
The 26-year-old made just his 16th appearance in all competitions for Spurs this season when he started their 4-0 win against Watford at White Hart Lane last weekend, and he was named as the man of the match by Sky Sports for his performance as he filled in for the first-choice Kyle Walker.
The former Burnley man picked up one assist as his brilliant cross to the back post was met with a fine finish by Heung-min Son in the second half, but he perhaps was unlucky not to have three more.
The right-back also sent two magnificent balls in from the right-hand side during the first half, neither of which could be converted by striker Vincent Jansson, while Son also hit the crossbar with another clever pass from Trippier after the interval.
Keown was impressed with the impact of the full-back – who also provided two assists against the Hornets earlier in the campaign – and believes he should be a regular fixture in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad.
The 50-year-old told Match of the Day: “I really like the core of those English players, Dier, Harry Kane, Walker, even Trippier.
“I’d be putting him in the England squad, perhaps ahead of Clyne, because when he comes in he is absolutely magnificent.”
Tottenham will look to keep the pressure up on Premier League leaders Chelsea when they host Bournemouth at White Hart Lane on Saturday, knowing they could close the gap to four points before the Blues face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
